How Do Historians Make Sense of the Present: Reflecting on the Russo-Ukrainian War
George Mason University Historian Steven Barnes kicks off the Fall 2022 Speaker Series, Russia's War on Ukraine in Historical Perspective with a series of reflections on how a historian, trained to write about the past and things long over, can try to make sense of a present, ongoing event like Russia's criminal war on Ukraine. How do historians use the past to understand the present? How do current events reshape historians' understanding of the past? What is the duty of the historian in the present? Dr. Barnes will talk about these questions and set the stage for a series of ten historians to share their historical knowledge and to reflect on how history helps them confront this war.
